Another Bas Bleu recommendation and spot on. Mr Stewart walked across Afghanistan - Herat to Kabul - and this book is his story of his journey. Fascinating, heartfelt, beautiful. I couldn't put it down, and stayed up far too late a few nights because I wanted just one more chapter. It was better than I expected - I had thought it might get preachy and political and while Mr Stewart does talk politics, it's not "we must do X!" or such. He simply lays out what he saw and heard and leaves the rest to each of us to decipher as we see fit.
