Where was I?
Well, I had to go north past this:
Yup, that's the Peace Arch at Peace Arch Park north of Blaine, WA - and south of VANCOUVER BC!
That's right, I went to the OLYMPICS! Holy cats! I still can't believe it.
On Tuesday I went to see Women's Curling - caught one of the qualifying rounds with the US team. I rode Amtrak up and back the same day, the trips bookended perfectly around the event. Same thing on Thursday, when I saw US Women's Hockey. Then on Monday the 22nd, a friend and I popped up to just enjoy the city for the day, no events. WHEW! I think it took me a week to catch up on sleep... every day was jam-packed and very little sleep was had between trips!
So, let's head off - here's Tuesday's fun!
Here's the train car on the way up, it was gorgeous and we all had so much fun together. Everyone was heading up for the Olympics, we all compared event notes and transportation choices, where's the best tourist stuff... the movie on the way up was "Cool Running" (the movie about the Jamaican bobsled team - how apt!).
The countryside south of Vancouver was lovely in our spring sunshine ... the area is a big agricultural hothouse spot, I'm told all of Canada's tomatoes are grown here! Ok ok, not ALL, but ya see what i mean.
Once we got to Vancouver, we were kept on the train while each car was emptied. But all of that "sit in your seat until you're released!" led to this - one great big line where everyone mushed about and messed up all that careful car-by-car stuff they did. This line took FOREVER. I believe we were here for about an hour!
I hopped on the Skytrain and headed to downtown Vancouver, but didn't bother trying to get into the Olympic Superstore seen here - the line was at least an hour and a half!
I spent some time walking around Vancouver, the pedestrian-only zones were fantastic! Tuesday's streets were nice and clear and no crowds.
I spotted these lovely gals out for the day, they were laughing and chattering. They helped me figure out how to get to the ticket office! Red jackets were everywhere, quite the Canadian symbol.
The line for the Royal Canadian Mint was at least an hour. I didn't have time.
I really liked this building. I thought it was a church, but found it was a business center.
I liked the windvane.
The Skytrain was fantastic. No waiting for traffic, easy on off, you could find the stations easily.
I stopped by Yahoo's "FANcouver" storefront. You could rest, check your email, and get free hot chocolate. Unfortunately it was about 65 degrees and I was sweltering in a thick winter coat, so no hot chocolate for me. You could get your photo taken and put up on the letters here, or do somethingi n the booths in the second photo - I didn't have time to check it out, I had to get down to Curling!
In the streets of Yaletown, there was activity everywhere you looked.
Street hockey
Jump rope competitions
So finally I was off down the Canada Line of the Skytrain, heading to the Olympic Center for Curling. It was an incredible wonderful day. I loved the graphics they had at these Olympics, here's a few out at the Center.
Loved these big signs at each event spot.
And here I am at Curling!
I was there mainly to see the US play Japan:

But there were three other matches at the same time - Denmark vs Sweden, Germany vs Russia, Canada vs Switzerland.
The volunteers in blue cleaned up during the breaks.

A close up of the USA/Japan match - alas, US was red.
Canada won and the place went insane!
The US/Japan match came down to measuring the very last two stones.
And alas, the decision went to Japan.
We all headed out after the match, into a glorious evening. We had a trek back out to the Skytrain station, but who cared when you had this to look at as you walked?
On one street was this lovely house. The cat in the window made me laugh. He was entranced by us walking by.
Here's a close-up!
After catching the Skytrain, I headed back to the train station and got my Business Class seat (the single seat on the left). I think I slept the whole way home. And our movie coming home? "Miracle" Ah ha ha!
So it was home again and flat out in bed at about 1:30am. Whew! It was a fantastic exhausting day! And there was one more that I knew of....
